Colonoscopy Preparation Instructions
Appointment Information

Please arrive 30 minutes before your appointment.

If you need to cancel, please call at least one day in advance using the phone number assigned to your appointment.

Bring your insurance card, identification card, and, if required, any previous diagnostic studies.

Please follow the marked instructions below.

For colonoscopies, make sure to follow the bowel cleansing instructions as directed.

You must stop taking Coumadin, Plavix, aspirin, or anti-inflammatory medications such as naproxen, Advil, Motrin, Anaprox, Celebrex, or other NSAIDs 7 days prior to the study.

Notify your primary care physician or cardiologist before stopping these medications.
Pertinent Instructions for Procedures
Gastroscopy / Endoscopy
You must arrive fasting. This means nothing by mouth after 12:00 a.m. midnight the night before.
Please make sure you have a designated driver on the day of the procedure because you will be under the effects of the sedatives administered during the procedure.
Colonoscopy
You must follow the cleansing instructions as directed. Otherwise, the study will be cancelled.

Short Colonoscopy / Sigmoidoscopy
You must follow the cleansing instructions as directed. Otherwise, the study will be cancelled.

Bowel Preparation
Instructions for CoLyte or GoLYTELY Use
The Morning Before the Study
-
Mix the powder provided in the gallon with water up to the marked line.
-
Place the gallon in the refrigerator until cold so it is easier to drink.
-
You must remain on a clear liquid diet all day until midnight, such as broth, juices, etc.
-
Nothing by mouth after midnight.
At 2:00 p.m. the Day Before the Study

Start drinking the gallon. Drink 8 ounces every 10 minutes until it is completely finished.
-
You should finish the gallon in less than 4 hours.
-
You must remain on a clear liquid diet all day until midnight, such as broth, juices, etc.
-
Nothing by mouth after midnight.
CoLyte or GoLYTELY will produce diarrhea. This is necessary to completely clean the large bowel and prepare it for the study.
If you are unable to drink the entire gallon, you need to change your appointment. Please call the telephone number assigned to your appointment to reschedule.
Entire Day Prior to Procedure
Clear Liquid Diet / No Solid Foods
Allowed items include:

Water

Sports drinks and strained fruit juices without pulp, including apple, white grape, or white cranberry


Sprite, limeade, or lemonade
Coffee or tea, without milk or non-dairy creamer

Clear broth or bouillon, but do not have soup

Gelatin desserts without added fruit or toppings, no red or purple
